August 12th - International Youth Day

On the 17th of December 1999 with a resolution of the UN General Assembly, as proposed by the World Conference of Youth Ministers, the 12th of August is declared as the International Youth Day. The UN General Assembly recommends public events and initiatives to be organised on that day in order to raise the public awareness towards the importance of the 2000 World youth initiatives and programmes.

The international youth day is celebrated for the first time in Bulgaria in 2007. It provides numerous opportunities for young people to develop their skills and potential; it is a day when their achievements are celebrated and praised; it gives opportunities to young people to be actively involved in the life of the society. Furthermore, this day provides unique chances for young people to participate in the decision-making processes on local, national and international level.

The 12th of August strongly emphasises on raising the public awareness towards the challenges young people face today. This is being done through information campaigns, public dialogue and focusing on the variety of young people's skills, interests desires.
