Some participants in the Young Explorer program took part in the celebration of World Wetlands Day (2 February). They were invited by the organizers - Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water - Plovdiv (RIEW), Green Balkans and the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds BirdLife Bulgaria (BSPB).
The event took place near the island of Adata, where experts spoke about the importance of wetlands for people and the environment. Various rare and protected species of wintering birds were observed in the Maritsa River, and young researchers had the opportunity to apply the skills acquired during the program to work with binoculars and a telescope.
The ornithologist Dr. Vladimir Dobrev from BSPB gave a short lecture on migratory birds in winter and the importance of protected areas in Bulgaria. At the end of the activity, the young people shared that the celebration of the World Wetlands Day was an exciting experience and some even expressed a desire to become volunteers in non-governmental organizations involved in ecology and environmental protection.
Educational program "Young Explorer" of M.E. "Youth Center Plovdiv" was held in October 2021 - January 2022. In it, the participants learned to recognize basic species of plants and animals, to work with binoculars and other tools of the researcher, met with specialists in the field and received guidelines for professional development in natural sciences. The person in charge of the program was Alexander Petrov - a youth worker, PhD student in ecology and ecosystem protection with many years of teaching experience.
