Born on 20.10.1954 in Plovdiv
Between 1976 and 2000 Nonka Matova participated in six Olympic Games. She is an Olympic vice-champion from Barcelona, Spain, in 1992 and winner of the alternative to the Olympics Druzhba tournament in Moscow, Russia in 1984. She made 11 world (two in category for men) and 28 European records (two in category for men) in sport shooting. Nonka Matova is Balkan and Republican record holder with rifle. She has won over 600 medals from sports competitions, including 76 of them in European Championships and 16 in World Championships. She received the prize for the most accurate shooter on the Balkan Peninsula and the world’s most precise shooter in 1985. She took fifth place at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics and sixth place in the category for men at the Olympics in Moscow, Russia, in 1980. She is a twenty-eight times European champion with two gold medals in category for men in Lviv, Ukraine, in 1979.
Nonka Matova started practicing sports shooting under Atanas Chitanov in the team of Maritsa, where she competed until 1977. After that she moved to the team of Levski-Spartak. She is the only woman-general in the most recent history of Bulgaria. Matova has been honorary citizen of Plovdiv since 2010.
