Penka Stoyanova - Basketball

With the national team Penka Stoyanova is a silver medalist from the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, as well as a bronze medalist from the Olympiad in Montreal, Canada, in 1976. She participated in eight European championships. Stoyanova is also silver medalist from Varna (1972) and bronze medalist from Clermont-Ferrand (1976). She has eight first places from participations in twelve Balkan Games and 2 third places at Youth Festival and Universiades. She was included in combined European team, where she was the captain (in 1972, 1976 and 1981). Stoyanova has second place at the 1973 Lima World Cup in Peru and at the R. W. Jones World Tournament in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1983, with the second team of Italy.

Penka Stoyanova is three-time champion of Bulgaria with the team of Maritsa Plovdiv for 1971, 1973 and 1974 under the coach Tencho Nachev. She is also a four-time silver and bronze medalist in the Bulgarian basketball championship. She has played twice in the finals of the Liliana Ronchetti European League Cup. Stoyanova has 580 matches for the national team. She was captain of all state teams, and from 1974 until 1981 she was captain of the women’s national team, in which she was first included during the World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1967.

Penka Stoyanova is the first Bulgarian basketball player to play professional basketball abroad. From 1981 until 1983 she was part of the Italian team of Roma. She has been included in the symbolic Number 5 of Europe by the Corriere dello Sport Newspaper. In 1969, Stoyanova was personally awarded by the President of Italy at the big international tournament in Avellino. She was twice named Athlete No 1 of Plovdiv. In 1985, in her honor, a first-time beneficiary match between the national team of Bulgaria and a mixed team of Europe was organized.

Penka Stoyanova has been an honorary citizen of Karlovo since 1985 and an honorary citizen of Plovdiv since 2000. She is among the torch bearers of the Olympic flame for the 2004Athens Games. In 2007, she was included in the FIBA ​​list of 35 competitors who have contributed to the development of world basketball in the second half of the 20th century.
