Stoyan Gunchev is an Olympic Volleyball Champion from Moscow, Russia, in 1980. His team also qualified for Olympic qualification in Barcelona, Spain, in January 1984, and took a quota for the Olympics in Los Angeles, USA. In 1978, Gunchev debuted at the World Championship in Italy. His next appearances with the national team are as follows: in 1982 at the World Cup in Argentina – fifth place and in 1983 at the European Championship in Berlin, Germany – bronze medal. For the 1987 – 1988 Season he played for the team of Mladost (Zagreb), where he became Vice-champion and took first place at the Cup of Yugoslavia.
Injury forced him to end his career in Italy and he focused on the coaching profession. In Itlay he worked for the team of Florence from 1991 until 1995 and from 1996 until 1999. In that period he became Vice-champion of the European Volleyball Confederation as a coach of the team of Romanelli (Florence). He took over the women’s team of CSKA for the 1999 – 2000 Season and made it champion and winner of the Cup of Bulgaria. For the 2001 – 2002 Season he worked in the City of Lodi, Italy.
In 1969, Stoyan Gunchev was admitted to the Vasil Levski Sports School. He trained volleyball under the coaches Marko Markov and Lyuben Shindov and competed for the team of Lokomotiv (Plovdiv). He played as setter. In 1976, the coach Vasil Simov invited him to compete for the team of CSKA and he remained in the team until 1986. During this time, he won 8 titles and 6 Cups of Bulgaria. Gunchev also has 1 third place at the European Champions’ Cup and one at the National Cup Winners’ Cup.
