Stoyanka Gruycheva - Rowing

 

Born on 18.03.1955 in Starosel, Plovdiv District

Stoyanka Gruycheva is the first Olympic champion from Plovdiv. She won a gold medal at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games in Canada at double sculls without helmsman with Siyka Kelbecheva. At the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games in Russia, she was part of a tandem that won a bronze medal and they both became the most successful rowers in Olympic waters. In Nottingham, Great Britain, in 1975 she first participated with her partner Siyka Kelbecheva, where they won fourth place. At the World Championship in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1977 she took fourth place with quadruple sculls with helmsman and fifth place at eight sculls. Milka Kulev aattracted her to this sport. Stoyanka Gruycheva continued her professional career with Lyuben Golev. Nikolay Zdravkov and Victor Doropheev were also her coaches.

Gruycheva has been honorary citizen of Plovdiv since 2001. She worked as an expert for the Plovdiv Region at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. She was also president of the Trakiya Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. In 2013 Gruycheva was awarded the Stara Planina Order.
