Todor Diev - Football

Todor Diev is the first Olympic bronze medalist from Plovdiv. He won his medal in 1956 at the Olympic Football Tournament in Melbourne, Australia. His debut in the national team was on 13.11.1955 in the match Bulgaria – Czechoslovakia (3:0), during which he scored the third goal. He was captain of the national team in 8 games. Todor Diev played in the 1962 World Cup in Chile. He became champion of Bulgaria with the team of Spartak (Plovdiv) in 1963 and was winner of the National Cup with the same team in 1958. He has played 308 games and has scored 146 goal in the A group. He participated in 55 games in the A group with the national team and in 7 games in the B group. Diev became top scorer of the country in 1955 (13 goals), in 1962 (23 goals) and in 1963 (26 goals). In 1958, he scored a goal against Brazil at the Estádio do Morumbi Stadium and he himself admits that they offered him superstar price to stay in the country of the coffee. Logically, at that time such a transfer could not happen.

Todor Diev was the first athlete to be awarded the Honorary Citizen of Plovdiv in 1961. In the same year he was awarded a golden Labor Order and Honored Master of Sport. He was included in the ideal team of Bulgaria for the three decades from 1944 until 1974.
